Acuvue-now.com, June 22, 2008 According to multiple sources on the web and unveiled at the British Contact Lens Association conference in Birmingham (May 29), Johnson & Johnson is introducing 1-Day Acuvue TruEye, a new disposable lens that will be available in the UK and Ireland in autumn 2008. Althought there wasn't any official release date announced for the US, we think that the new lens will (most likely) be made available in North America by the end of the year or in early 2009.
For more information (including updates and images) visit our new 1-Day Acuvue TruEye section. The lens is manufactured from a new material, narafilcon A, which has an extremely high oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) of 118. It features Hydraclear, a moisture-rich ingredient specifically designed for the daily disposable modality and a new formulation of the technology already used in Acuvue Advance, Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism, Acuvue Oasys and Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism.
The parameter range at launch will be a base curve of 8.5mm and 14.2mm diameter with powers from -0.50D to -6.00D, to be followed by a 9.0mm base curve and powers from -12.00D to +6.00D. David Ruston, Johnson and Johnson's director of professional affairs for the UK, Ireland, Holland and Nordics, said that the distinctive lens design and manufacturing process of 1-Day Acuvue TruEye made it the biggest breakthrough to date in daily disposable contact lens technology.
'We believe this is the future for contact lenses and that practitioners will want to fit significant numbers of new patients and existing wearers with the product,' he told Optician (an online source for professional opticians in the UK). Selected UK practitioners have been trialling the TruEye lens and it will now be rolled out in stages with a full launch this autumn. Announcing the launch, company group chairman for J&J Vision Care Michael Sneed said that the UK would be the lead market for the lens worldwide and acknowledged the strategic importance of the UK for the industry.
