Vistakon Introduces Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia

Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 7, 2009
Vistakon, a Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., today announced plans to introduce Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia. The lens, which is the first new multifocal contact lens from the makers of Acuvue in 11 years, is now available in some U.S. eye care professionals' offices and distribution will grow throughout 2009.

Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia combines new Stereo Precision Technology optics with senofilcon A, the same silicone hydrogel material of Acuvue Oasys, and HydraClear Plus, the improved formulation of the unique HydraClear technology that combines high performance base materials with a moisture-rich wetting agent. Stereo Precision Technology offers wearers clear and comfortable vision correction at all distances with less dependence on illumination than older generation multifocal contact lenses.

Presbyopia is a vision condition in which the natural lens of the eye gradually loses flexibility, making it difficult to focus on close objects. Everyone will experience presbyopia to some extent and its onset can begin to occur as early as in the late thirties and early forties. Currently, an estimated 90 million people in the United States have presbyopia or will develop it by 2014.

"Emerging or early presbyopes may begin to notice challenges with a multitude of near-point tasks such as looking at a menu, deciphering text from a cell phone or other handheld electronic device, or reading the GPS or satellite radio devices in their cars," explains Susan Resnick, O.D. "Besides struggling with their vision, many of these contact lens wearers also cite problems with dryness and discomfort and consider abandoning contact lens wear despite a strong desire to continue wearing them. The synergy of a proven comfortable material and innovative technologies in Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia provides contact lens wearers experiencing the early symptoms of presbyopia a better option for continued contact lens use."

Stereo Precision Technology

Stereo Precision Technology provides wearers with a smooth transition in power over the front surface of the lens to provide balanced near and distance vision with less dependence on illumination and minimal glares, haloes or ghosting.

Senofilcon A

Senofilcon A, a new generation silicone hydrogel material is a breakthrough for contact lens wearers whose eyes can feel tired and dry in challenging environments, such as long hours of computer use, frequent ground or air travel, or everyday exposure to heated or air conditioned surroundings. Research confirms that senofilcon A can alleviate some of the common problems of soft contact lens wear, such as discomfort due to feelings of dryness, and contribute to longer hours of comfortable wear. The material is 50% smoother than other currently available silicone hydrogel lenses.

HydraClear Plus

HydraClear Plus, the improved formulation of the unique HydraClear technology, combines high performance base materials with a moisture-rich wetting agent to create a more wettable, ultra smooth contact lens especially for challenging environments that can make eyes feel tired and dry.

Class I UV Blocking

Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia blocks greater than 96 percent of UVA rays and 99 percent of UVB rays, meeting the highest UV-blocking standards for contact lenses.  Although UV-blocking contact lenses provide important added protection for patients, they should not be viewed as a stand-alone solution. Contact lenses should always be worn in conjunction with high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for maximum UV protection for the eyes.
