Born in Toronto, Ontario, Hardy grew up in Eastern Canada until, after graduating from Bishops University in 1993, his passion for skiing pulled him to the West Coast. He spent a year skiing in Whistler and came to the decision that BC was his home. While at Bishops University Hardy was a member of the men’s rugby team, where his competitive nature garnered him the Most Valuable Male Athlete of the year award for his team. Later in his career, it was this competitive spirit that helped Hardy succeed in an online industry in which thousands had entered, and failed. Settling in Vancouver BC, Roger began to build his resume working for a transportation and logistics company later purchased by DHL worldwide, followed by Wessley Jessen. It wasn’t long before his innate entrepreneurial affinity began to take over, and Coastal Contacts was borne. The knowledge and expertise Hardy had acquired in logistics and contact lenses from his previous positions, would later become invaluable skills in running his own mail order business. Still managing a balance between work and play, Hardy is a member of the Jericho Tennis Club, where he plays squash for the Premiere Division. Hardy helped his team clinch the City League Championship for 2007. Hardy has been a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) since 2004, and currently sits on the membership committee for the YPO Vancouver Chapter. Hardy feels honored to be recognized with many awards over his years as Coastal’s leader, including BC Business Magazine’s (Top Forty under Forty” in 2002, and The Pacific Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Business-to-Consumer) in 2006. Michaela Tokarski - Short Bio
Michaela Tokarski graduated from the University of Waterloo, then went to the University of Victoria's business school in 2000 imagining a career in international business. But when she arrived at the West Coast campus, it was the school's entrepreneurship specialty that caught her eye. While still in school — and with the support of professors — she unexpectedly found herself putting class theory into practice as she joined her brother, Roger Hardy, in co-founding Coastal Contacts Inc. Ms. Tokarski credits some of the early success to what she was learning in school. "One day my brother asked me if I had ever taken a course in accounting and when I said 'Yes, one class,' he said 'Great, you are the bookkeeper.' For the first two years, she served as chief operating officer of the new venture and, until 2006, as vice-president of sales and marketing. Now 31 and living in Ottawa, the married mother of two young children remains on the board of Coastal Contacts. Last year, she joined MODASolutions Inc. as vice-president of marketing for the Ottawa-based online payments company. CoastalContacts TodayCoastal has operations in North America, Europe and Asia. The company has 190 employees and has shipped over 100,000,000 contact lenses since inception. Coastal is one of the fastest growing retailers of contact lenses in the world with a compound annual growth rate of 79% Coastal is the second largest company in the industry with 2007 revenues of over $100 million.
